How to Enable Dark Mode on Any Website (Step-by-Step Guide)
Staring at a bright white screen for hours is hard on your eyes, especially when working late or in a dimly lit room. While many apps and operating systems now offer built-in dark mode, most websites still do not. The result: you switch to a dark OS theme, open Chrome, and get blasted by a white webpage.
The fix is simple. With the Dark Mode Everywhere extension, you can apply a dark theme to any website with a single click. Here is exactly how to set it up.
Installation
-
Open the Chrome Web Store
Navigate to Dark Mode Everywhere on the Chrome Web Store. You can also search for "Dark Mode Everywhere BananaWare" directly in the store.

-
Click "Add to Chrome"
Click the blue "Add to Chrome" button. A confirmation dialog will appear listing the permissions the extension needs. Dark Mode Everywhere only requests permission to modify page appearance -- it does not read your data or track your browsing.

- Confirm the installation Click "Add extension" in the confirmation dialog. You will see a small notification confirming the extension has been added, and the Dark Mode Everywhere icon will appear in your Chrome toolbar.
Using Dark Mode Everywhere
-
Toggle dark mode on any page
Navigate to any website and click the Dark Mode Everywhere icon in your toolbar. The page will instantly switch to a dark color scheme. Click the icon again to toggle back to the original light theme.

-
Enable auto-dark mode (optional)
Right-click the toolbar icon and select "Options" to access settings. Turn on "Auto-enable dark mode" to automatically apply dark mode to every website you visit. You can add specific sites to an exclusion list if you prefer them in light mode.

-
Adjust brightness and contrast
In the extension popup, use the brightness and contrast sliders to fine-tune the appearance. Some websites look better with slightly higher brightness. Your settings are remembered per site.

Why Use Dark Mode?
Reduced eye strain. Dark backgrounds with light text cause less eye fatigue during long reading or coding sessions, particularly in low-light environments.
Better sleep quality. Bright screens suppress melatonin production. Using dark mode in the evening can help your body wind down naturally.
Battery savings on OLED displays. If you use a laptop or monitor with an OLED or AMOLED panel, dark pixels use less power. Dark mode can meaningfully extend battery life on these devices.
Less visual clutter. Many users find that dark themes make content easier to focus on by reducing the visual noise of bright backgrounds and colorful UI elements.
Works Everywhere
Dark Mode Everywhere is designed to handle even complex websites with nested frames, dynamic content, and custom CSS. It works on Google Docs, GitHub, Reddit, Wikipedia, news sites, forums, and virtually every other site you visit daily. If a site already has its own dark mode, the extension intelligently detects this and stays out of the way.
